I was wondering if you were going to post anything about the story of Mohammed Atta and 3 other 9/11 terrorists being identified in 1999. I think that it is interesting that the 9/11 commission didn’t think that this was important enough to be included in the final report. I just wanted to get your thoughts because sometimes you provide an engaging opinion in your posts.

Hey Northside,
I don't actually know too much about this. I heard that one of the London bombers had been detained and released in the Northwest, and that incarcerating him MAY have altered the course of events. I also heard that leaks from the White House a couple years ago tipped terrorists to the fact they were being watched and caused them to flee before British police could arrest them.

What are your thoughts? Want to point me to an article?

It was in the New York Times and Post and also in most of the other major papers except for the LA Times or the SF Chronicle. Congressman Weldon (R-PA) is the big driving force behind the story and is the one pushing for Congressional hearings.

The crux of the story is apparently General Sheldon (Joint Chiefs of Staff) set up a special forces military intelligence group called “Able Danger” to try to locate Al Qaeda cells through the world. The group locked on to Atta and 3 other 9/11 conspirators living in New York (in '99)through data mining and wanted the FBI to pick up Atta and the others but they were stopped by either DOD or White House lawyers. The lawyers told the members of the group that Atta and the others were in the country legally and therefore could not be picked up. The lawyers also said that they didn’t want to deal with the negative political ramifications if a possible raid went bad (like in Waco). The members in “Able Danger” tried several times to alert the FBI of the threat and finally the lawyers told them to leave it alone because of the wall between FBI, CIA, and military intelligence.

The New York Post has an article by Deborah Orin on the whole controversy concering the 9/11 commission missing the intel on Atta.

^^avoid the New York Post at all costs...if the stories written inside were any more colorful it would be a tabloid.
